About Perlmutter Family ShopRites
Perlmutter Family ShopRites began as G & P Markets, founded by Julius Perlmutter and his brother-in-law, Ben Goldstein in the 1930s in Lakewood, NJ. A few years later, Julius opened a store in Toms River. In 1947, along with his brother Seymour they expanded and built a modern supermarket. The store was approximately 10,000 square feet, which they named “Community Food Market.”
That same year, Julius and Seymour joined the Wakefern Food Cooperative, joining forces with other grocers to benefit from volume purchasing and combined advertising power to bring better pricing to their customers. The company’s name was changed to Toms River ShopRite and its corporate name changed to Perlmart, Inc.
Over the next decades, the Perlmutter Family remodeled and expanded its stores throughout southern New Jersey and today, Perlmutter Family ShopRites, now operated by Julius’ son, Michael, and his partner Jim Haslett, own and operate seven ShopRite stores throughout Ocean County, New Jersey, including locations in Manahawkin, Lacey, Toms River, Manchester, Jackson, Bayville and Waretown.
Perlmutter Family ShopRites supports more than 300 local organizations including youth sports programs, school groups, non-profit agencies and first responders. With the support of store associates, Perlmutter Family ShopRites strives to make the local communities we serve a better place to live and work.
As always, “family” is the word that defines much of the Perlmutter Family ShopRites philosophy. The organization cares about its role in the community along with the well-being and success of its associates. The company prides itself on being the retail employer of choice in Ocean County.
